The traditional head and neck examination performed by clinicians is highly effective at identifying visible changes on the tissue surface. However, the early changes leading to oral cancer typically begin beneath the surface epithelium, at the basement membrane. These sub-surface changes are often undetectable to the unaided eye until the disease has progressed to involve the epithelial surface.

For current and prospective VELscope users, substantial clinical data supports that VELscope screening significantly enhances a clinician's ability to detect abnormalities. This enhanced detection has consistently been shown to improve patient outcomes and save lives. Nevertheless, a lack of familiarity with the screening process or challenges in securing patient acceptance for a modest out-of-pocket fee may limit the opportunity to provide this potentially
